Caruso Crescenzo, 82, in front of his house. "I like living here more that in the old town, it was to low and the summers were too hot. Here we have more spaces, more bars and better streets". With the earthquake of the 21st of August, 1962, the old town of Melito Irpino was left heavily damaged. The 200 families were evacuated and lived in wooden houses until 1975, when the construction of the new town ended. The old town was torn down some 20 years later to prevent vagabonds to set up house there. The collapsing church and castle are the only remaints of this medioeval town.

Here a worker is completing the pavement of the new meeting center of the town. This and other buildiongs are now completed utilizing EU funds for promoting the development and tourism of the region.
